Postcard from Calgary

Dear Panamericans,

We, Canadian and non-Canadian residents gathered on this day, the 3rd of June, 2006 at the Olympic Plaza of Calgary, Alberta write this postcard as a memento of our time here.

We acknowledge the Calgarian mythology of the West, the frontier, the promise of black gold, the rush of hitting it big;

We also acknowledge that the myth is fed throughout Panamerica- and that the frontier is always out of reach;

We acknowledge that the prosperity of Calgary is an incomplete prosperity, as privatization is being built while public services and facilities are neglected;

As cultural agents, we acknowledge that even if we can’t solve the problems of the world we can say something about those problems. We are truth-tellers and communicators in the interest of increasing dialogue;

We acknowledge the need for critical discourse, written, spoken, and performed, and we believe that the arts are part of a healthy community;

We propose the development of communities that acknowledge and move beyond historical and transnational mythologies, emphasizing cultural strengths and multi-faceted perspectives alongside these historical narratives.

Our dream for Calgary as visitors and residents includes carless streets, affordable living, and an expansion of an identity beyond the oil well.

Queridos Panamericanos,

Nosotros, residentes canadienses y no-canadienses que se citan en este día, 3 de junio del 2006, en la plaza olímpica de Calgary, Alberta, escribimos esta postal como recuerdo de nuestro encuentro aquí.

Reconocemos la mitología de Calgary del oeste, la frontera, el oro negro, y la quimera del éxito rotundo;

Reconocemos asimismo que el mito se alimenta a lo largo de Panamérica- y que la frontera siempre está fuera de alcance;

Reconocemos que la prosperidad de Calgary es incompleta, puesto que la privatización ha sido construída mientras que los servicios públicos han sido ignorados;

Como agentes culturales, reconocemos que incluso si no podemos resolver los problemas del mundo, sí podemos decir algo acerca de esos problemas. Somos decidores de verdades, comunicadores en el interés de incrementar diálogo;

Reconocemos la necesidad de un discurso crítico, escrito, hablado, y actuado, y creemos que las artes son parte de una comunidad saludable;

Proponemos el desarrollo de comunidades que se muevan más allá de mitologías históricas y trasnacionales, enfatizando fortalezas culturales y perspectivas multi-facéticas al lado de estas narrativas históricas.

Nuestro sueño para Calgary como visitantes y residentes incluye avenidas sin autos, vivienda accesible, y una expansión de la identidad más allá del pozo petrolero.
