THE PANAMERICAN ADDRESS OF THE PEOPLE OF VANCOUVER
WE, the people of Vancouver, on this day, Saturday May 27th, 2006, at the Helen Pitt Gallery, located in Vancouver’s historical Gastown district:
Whereas we recognize that British Columbia is our home or native land, dating back to its incorporation in 1886 as a Province of the country of Canada;
Whereas British Columbia was the northern terminus of Spanish colonial exploration, which connects Vancouver with a long history in the Americas, and has the migrations of various other communities, such the Squamish, Musqueam, Stó:lo, Tsleil-Waututh, Japanese, Chinese, Sikh, Dutch, and English, Finnish, and those we have left out;
Whereas we recognize that this region has been defined by uncertainty and instability, a contested ground, in a constant state of reclamation, with a history of misplaced claims and ownership;
Whereas we recognize that this land is characterized by an underlying process of change, embodied by its running underground creeks and peat fires;
Whereas we acknowledge the rain;
Whereas we acknowledge Vancouver resident’s anxiety about a culture and economy obsessed with real estate, knowing this emphasis creates brutal results on individual and collective lives;
Whereas the real state development industry in the city of Vancouver is trying to pave away the historical memory of this city, with gravel and rock, and whereas we recognize that the forces of development that are endangering the memory of this environment and its cultural history;
Whereas we assert our right to ride naked in Vancouver and call it “art” and also to refuse calling it “art”; we assert the allure of our prosthesis; the natural and the supernatural;
And whereas while we recognize that we are part of a constant process that overwrites patterns of use here, as in any city;
We acknowledge that this unease is an sign of urgent endemic problems that
have to be confronted and solved;
Vancouver’s ground is burning from underneath;
We assert our desire to contest over-production and over-consumption, specially when applied to capitalistic models of artmaking, when the focus becomes making more and showing more, laboring away from our true goals;
We have a dream for Vancouver, realizing Vancouver is already a dream;
Our notions of community and the local will not exclude the nomad and the trans-national or the trans-cultural.
We assert our resolve to create a network of artists to rectify these issues, constructing a unified front of defense toward the following ideals: the preservation of memory, the nurturing of local culture, and the opening of space to dream lucidly.

EL DISCURSO PANAMERICANO DE LA GENTE DE VANCOUVER
Nosotros, los ciudadanos de Vancouver, en este dia sábado 27 de mayo del 2006, en la galería Helen Pitt localizada en el distrito histórico de Gastown de esta ciudad;
Dado que reconocemos que British Columbia es nuestro hogar o tierra nativa, remontándose a su incorporación en 1886 como provincia de la nación del Canadá;
Dado que British Columbia fue el punto terminal en el norte de la exploración colonial española, la cual conecta a Vancouver con una larga historia en las Américas, y que ha recibido la inmigración de muchas otras comunidades tales como los Squamish, Musqueam, Stó:lo, Tsleil-Waututh, japoneses, chinos, sikh, holandeses, ingleses, finlandeses y otros que hayamos omitido;
Dado que reconocemos que esta región ha sido definida por incertidumbre e inestabilidad, como tierra en conflicto y en constante proceso de reposesión;
Dado que reconocemos que esta tierra se caracteriza por un proceso de cambio, representado por sus arrollos e incendios subterráneos;
Dado que reconocemos la lluvia;
Dado que reconocemos la ansiedad de los residentes por una cultura y economía obsesionada con las bienes raíces, sabiendo que este énfasis crea resultados brutales en las vidas de individuos y comunidades;
Mientras que la industria de las bienes raíces en la ciudad de Vancouver está tratando de enterrar la memoria histórica de la ciudad con grava y roca, y dado que reconocemos que las fuerzas de construcción ponenen en peligro la memoria de este ambiente y su historia cultural;
Dado que proclamamos nuestro derecho a pasear desnudos por Vancouver y considerarlo arte, y también rehusarnos a considerarlo arte; proclamamos el atractivo de nuestras prótesis, tanto las naturales como las sobrenaturales;
Y meintras que reconocemos que somos pare de un proceso constante que borra patrones de uso como en cualquier otra ciudad;
Reconocemos que esta incertidumbre es una señal de urgentes problemas endémicos que deben de ser confrontados y solucionados;
El suelo de Vancouver se está quemando desde adentro;
Proclamamos nuestro deseo de desafiar la sobre-producción y el sobre-consumo, especialmente cuando se aplican a modelos capitalistas de hacer arte, y cuando el enfoque se convierte el hacer y mostrar más, alejándonos de nuestros verdaderos objetivos a través del exceso de trabajo;
Tenemos un sueño para Vancouver, sabiendo que Vancouver es en sí un sueño;
Nuestras nociones de comunidad y de lo local no exluirán al nómada al trans-nacional ni al trans-cultural;
Proclamamos nuestra determinación para crear una red de artistas que ayuden a rectificar estos temas, constuyendo un frente unido hacia los siguientes ideales: la preservación de la memoria, el fomento a la cultura local, y la apertura de un espacio para soñar con lucidez.
